The Cathedral of St Teresa of Ávila presides over St Teresa Square and is one of Požega’s defining Baroque monuments. Zagreb bishop Franjo Thauszy initiated its construction after Maria Theresa granted permission in 1754; the foundation stone was blessed in 1756 and the solemn consecration took place on 24 July 1763. It is a single-nave church with a slender bell tower, while its interior is shaped by Baroque and Rococo decoration. Notable furnishings include liturgical vessels and vestments, among them a 1763 gift from Maria Theresa. It has been the cathedral of the Diocese of Požega since that diocese was founded in 1997.
