Đakovo Cathedral of St Peter is the architectural work most closely associated with Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Construction began in 1866 to designs by Karl Rösner; after his death, Friedrich von Schmidt continued the project, and the church was consecrated in 1882. The three-aisled basilica has a Latin-cross plan, red-brick exterior, twin façade towers and a dome above the crossing. Its interior is richly painted and furnished with sculpture, altars and a large organ, while Strossmayer is buried in the crypt. Standing in the centre of Đakovo, the cathedral is essential for visitors interested in Historicist architecture and major Croatian sacred art.
