Lonjsko Polje Nature Park covers 50,650 hectares along the Sava, including Mokro Polje and a strip beside the river’s left bank, and has been protected since 1990. It is the largest floodplain and water-retention area in the Sava valley, as well as a Ramsar wetland. Seasonal floods shape habitats and a landscape where extensive grazing, traditional rural architecture and vital areas for migratory birds have endured. Nearly 140 bird species nest here, making the park especially rewarding for birdwatchers. Čigoč, one of the principal starting points, has an education and visitor centre with information, learning programmes, bicycle hire and canoe hire. Motor vehicles are not permitted in the flooded part of the park.
